Attestation

Any member willing to let her name stand for office at any level of the league must complete an attestation and submit to the Nominations Committee. This letter of attestation replaces the letter of recommendation from clergy, previously adopted for submission and that recommendation will now, not be necessary. However, the reasons for the letter of attestation are similar in purpose. The League at all levels needs to try to encourage women who are true to the Catholic church and who are, simply, practising Catholics.

A woman running for office should be “in good standing with the Catholic Church” as per the Constitution & By-laws. She should be baptized Catholic. If divorced, she should receive an annulment before entering into another relationship and be married in the Catholic Church.

Because it had been discovered that some women were not in good standing and may not even have realized that she was not, it was decided advisable to have some kind of awareness as to the responsibility. Just as in our parishes and many organizations, a reference or police check is required; so we too, ask for this simple declaration.
